Adaptation to Climate Change Impacts and Disaster Risk Reduction Capacity Development Program for Stakeholders – Kalutara District Waste management and Recycling Strategies
In the Western Province, Kalutara district has been recognized as a high priority area in implementing programs related to adaptation to climate impacts and disaster risk reduction, a district which is prone to disasters due to geological and other characteristics.
Accordingly, two school programs were held on 05.11.2024 and 07.10.2024 with the participation of School children and parents, to sensitize school students and teachers on adaptation to climate change impacts and disaster risk reduction.
- Maragahadeniya Vivekananda Tamil Junior College in Palindanuvara Divisional Secretariat and
- Yatagampitiya Junior College in Bulathsinghala Divisional Secretariat
These Programs were organized and conducted by the Provincial Climate Unit of the Western
Province in collaboration with other stakeholders.
Simultaneously, two programs were conducted on 19.11.2024 to educate the children and parents of primary schools on waste management and recycling, which directly contribute to adaptation to climate change impacts and disaster risk reduction.
Few of the talking points of these programs were as follows;
- Importance of waste management
- The need for waste management and waste segregation in the school environment
- Making eco-friendly bricks using plastic and polythene
- Recycling strategies to turn waste into money
Ms. R. Shanmugapriya, Assistant Director (Technology and Training) of the Western Province Waste Management Authority and Ms. Niranja Jayasena, District Manager of Kalutara, generously distributed the subject knowledge among the school children and parents.
In order to direct the children to actively and creatively manage the waste, they were directed to quiz programs and various activities and prizes were also distributed among the winners.
